A Gospel Habit

"If you have a twenty-hour-a-week television habit and would repent and convert it into a gospel-study habit, in one year you could read the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the entire Bible. In addition, you could read Jesus the Christ, The Articles of Faith, Gospel Principles, the basic priesthood manual, the basic women's manual, the basic children's manual, all three volumes of Doctrines of Salvation, The Miracle of Forgiveness, The Promised Messiah, and Essentials in Church History, and could then re-read the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. This would still leave time to read the Ensign, the New Era, and the Friend each month and the Church News each week. This is based on your ability to read only ten pages an hour. The average person can read twenty pages or more an hour."

Mormonism 101

Describing the character of Latter-day Saints, Newsweek magazine wrote: “No matter where Mormons live, they find themselves part of a network of mutual concern; in Mormon theology everyone is a minister of a kind, everyone is empowered in some way to do good to others, and to have good done unto them: it is a 21st century covenant of caring. This caring is not limited to Church members alone, but extends far beyond.”  

Tolstoy and Mormons

So what value do you think Tolstoy would have placed on the church which contains the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ? I will close with a quote from Elder David B. Haight in the Ensign, May, 1980, where he reports a conversation between Tolstoy and Andrew White, the foreign ambassador of the United States to Russia: "[The Mormons'] principles teach the people not only of heaven and its attendant glories, but how to live so that their social and economic relations with each other are placed on a sound basis.

If the people follow the teaching of this church, nothing can stop their progress—it will be limitless."There have been many great movements started in the past but they have died or been modified before they reach maturity. If Mormonism is able to endure, unmodified, until it reaches the third and fourth generation, it is destined to become the greatest power the world has ever known."

I’ve always felt that Mormonism is the real “inconvenient truth”.

Many years ago a learned man, a member of the Roman Catholic Church came to Utah and spoke from the stand of the SL Tabernacle. I became well acquainted with him and we conversed freely and frankly. A great Scholar, with perhaps a dozen languages at this tongues end, he seemed to know all about theology, law, literature, science and philosophy. One day he said to me: "you Mormons are all ignoramuses. You don't even know the strength of your own position. It is so strong that there is only one other tenable in the whole Christian world, and this is the position of the Catholic Church. The issue is between Catholicism and Mormonism. If we are right, you are wrong; if you are right, we are wrong; and that's all there is to it. The Protestants haven't a leg to stand on. For, if we are wrong, they are wrong with us since they were a part of us and went out from us; while is we are right, they are apostates who we cut off long ago. If we have the apostolic succession from St. Peter, as we claim, there is no need of Joseph Smith and Mormonism; but if we have not that succession, then such a man as Joseph Smith was necessary, and Mormonism attitude is the only consistent one. It is either the perpetuation of the gospel from Ancient times, or the restoration of the gospel in the latter day.”
